How to Start Performing Improv

If you want to start an improv troupe, or you’re looking to build your acting skills and confidence, or you just want a fun and challenging hobby, this article can get you started in improvisational comedy. Before you tackle the advanced games you might see professional improv players perform, you’ll need to master some basics.

Accepting: Acceptance is essential to all Improv activities. It is the actor’s role to accept and build upon any offer from another player. As in business, the refusal to accept an offer or idea in Improv immediately blocks its development, possibly forever.

The Memory Ensemble takes that template a step further with theatrical improvisation, a method that treats all words as useful and welcomes the expression of feelings that emerge on the twisting path of memory loss — terror, frustration, even joy.

The experience also helps participants learn to trust their instincts and make decisions based on the present, rather than the past.
